For the song "Black Velvet," which she wrote, Canadian singer-songwriter Alannah Myles received both a Grammy and a Juno Award. The song reached the top ten in Canada and peaked at number one on the 1990 US Billboard Hot 100. She started playing solo shows in southern Ontario when she was 18 years old, when she finally met Christopher Ward, a recording artist and songwriter with Warner Music Group. She created her own band with Ward's assistance, played cover songs of blues and rock classics, and worked on her original material.
