Alaska

Alaska is a Spanish-Mexican singer who is well-known in Spain and Hispanic America. Her real name is Mara Olvido Gara Jova. She was a founding member of La Movida Madrilea, the artistic and cultural movement that emerged after Francoist Spain's collapse. This movement illustrated what Spain had become into under Franco through the explosion and collision of music, the arts, film, and fashion. Since the late 1970s, she has been a member of a number of musical ensembles, including Kaka de Luxe in 1977, Alaska y los Pegamoides in 1980, Alaska y Dinarama in 1983, and Fangoria since 1989. Alaska is still performing now and has come to represent Spain in the 1980s.
