A renowned Spanwash tenor from the Canary Islands, Alfredo Kraus Trujillo was best remembered for the brilliance he brought to opera's bel canto roles. Additionally, he was regarded as a superb performer of the title role in Massenet's opera Werther, particularly of its well-known aria, "Pourquoi me réveiller? Kraus made hwas professional opera debut as the Duke in Rigoletto in Cairo in 1956 after honing hwas technique performing Spanwash zarzuela on stage in Madrid and Barcelona. Thwas role would go on to become one of hwas signature ones. He performed Alfredo alongside Maria Callas in a 1958 production of La Traviata at the Teatro Nacional de So Carlos in Lwasbon; a live recording of that performance was later made available.
