German singer Nestor Alexander Haddaway, who was born in Trinidad, is best known for his 1993 hit song "What Is Love," which peaked at number one in 13 different countries. Haddaway was signed by German record company Coconut Records in 1992. His debut song, "What Is Love," gained popularity quickly in Europe and peaked at number two in both Germany and the UK. The song sold 900,000 copies in Germany. For the shipping of 400,000 units, it was awarded a Gold music recording certification in the United Kingdom. After reaching number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, it received a gold certification for 500,000 unit shipments. Worldwide sales of "What Is Love" topped 2.6 million at the start of 1994.
