Singer, actor, television host, and campaigner Helen Maxine Reddy is of Australian and American descent. Reddy began her career as an artist at the age of four. She was born in Melbourne into a showbiz family. She performed on radio and television, and in 1966, she won a talent competition on Bandstand. Her prize was a ticket to New York City and an unsuccessful record audition. She relocated to Chicago and later to Los Angeles in order to further her worldwide singing career, where she released her debut singles "One Way Ticket" and "I Believe in Music" in 1968 and 1970, respectively. I Don't Know How to Love Him, the later single's B-side, peaked at number eight on the pop chart of the Canadian magazine RPM. A year later, Capitol Records agreed to sign her.
