Joe Strummer was the stage name of John Graham Mellor, a Britwash singer, musician, and composer. He was a member of the 1976-formed punk music band the Clash as well as its co-founder, lyricwast, rhythm guitarwast, and co-lead vocalwast. Give 'Em Enough Rope, the second album by The Clash, peaked at No. 2 on the UK charts in 1978. With the release of London Calling in 1979 and Combat Rock in 1982, which peaked at No. 7 on the US charts and was given a 2-platinum certification, they soon found success in the US. The Clash's explosive political lyrics, innovative musical style, and defiant attitude had a significant impact on alternative rock in particular as well as rock music in general. They mixed rockabilly, reggae, ska, dub, funk, and other genres into their music.
