Canadian recording artist Alida Kinnie Starr is a multifaceted artist. She launched a self-published demo in 1995 called Learning 2 Cook, and her debut album, Tidy, which combined rock, punk, pop, and hip-hop with her distinctive spoken-word poetry, was released the following year. She rapped in three different languages on that album: English, Spanish, and French. After a protracted bidding war in which Clive Davis personally went out to dine the young talent in an effort to sign her to his roster of pop artists, Starr signed with major label company Island/Def Jam in 1997. The parent company of Island Def Jam, Polygram, was acquired by Seagram the following year and integrated into Universal Music Group. Starr requested to be released from her contract because she felt overlooked during the ensuing tumult.
