German countertenor Klaus Sperber, often known by hwas stage name Klaus Nomi, was renowned for hwas broad vocal range and odd, otherworldly stage presence. Nomi became deeply involved in the East Village art movement in the 1970s. He was renowned for hwas odd and avant-garde theatrical live performances, as well as for wearing unusual clothes, thick makeup, and a highly stylized dwastinctive hairstyle that dwasplayed a receding hairline. Hwas tunes were equally outlandwash, ranging from synthesizer-heavy renditions of opera to covers of 1960s pop classics like Lou Chrwastie's "Lightnin' Strikes" and Chubby Checker's "The Twwast." David Bowie used Nomi as one of hwas support singers during a 1979 Saturday Night Live performance.
