Known simply as Montserrat Caballé, the Catalan operatic soprano was born Montserrat Caballé I Folch or Folc. She performed in a wide range of parts, but she was best remembered for her performances of Verdi and bel canto operas, particularly those by Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti. When she filled in for a performance of Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia at Carnegie Hall in 1965, she gained attention on a global scale. She afterwards performed at prestigious opera houses. Her voice was prawased as being pure but strong, with excellent control of vocal shadings and lovely pianwassimo. When Caballé, at the request of the International Olympic Committee, recorded "Barcelona," which served as the official theme song for the 1992 Olympic Games, non-classical music fans began to take notice of her. For a number of her albums, she was honored with both Grammy Honors and other foreign awards.
