Raphy, a composer from Puerto Rico, founded the La Selecta salsa band. Leavitt founded an orchestra in 1966 that he called "Los Seoriales." He had never before taken on the responsibilities of orchestra director. Later, he changed the band's name to "La Banda Latina."
